Retain Moisture And Nutrients
Zeolite is a non biodegradable media/soil amendment that offers a range of benefits to your soil and plants and is often used in the horticulture industry due to it's excellent water retention and high CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), helping reduce watering and fertiliser costs by retaining nutrients in the root zone that would otherwise have been lost to leaching.
Zeolite is a great water/nutrient moderator, absorbing up to 60% of its weight in water and slowly releasing the water and nutrients under the plant’s demand. It also increases the permeation of water and nutrients through the soil, and helps prevent soil/media erosion. Because it doesn't biodegrade it is a permanent soil amendment, helping your soil resist compaction and assisting in the aeration of deep root systems.
Zeolite is also useful to control the leaching of nutrients, particularly nitrogen due to its high CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), absorbing ammonia which is then converted to nitrogen. It is in this process that it also reduces odours which make it great for adding to your compost. This will improve your final product as it will have greater water retention and nitrogen percentages. Zeolite can also be added into planting holes or in the bottom of your pots and planters so the draining water can be absorbed and escaping nutrients can be recovered and used by the plant.
Zeolite is also useful for inhibiting the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the soil/media through cation exchange, trapping them within the zeolite and making them unavailable to plants and organisms.
